Description
 OLD POWDER MAGAZINE

The first blockhouse was in the north angle of the stockade near the corner of Washington and Front Streets. This was destroyed by the French and Indians at the time of the Massacre of 1690. Close to the blockhouse was the powder magazine, half-buried in the ground and covered over with earth. It was probably built about 1680 and stood on land then belonging to Captain Sanders Glen between Washington Avenue and the Binne Kill. In the cellar of the house now standing at 26 Washington Avenue are the remains of what is believed to have been the old powder magazine.
