Description
 DAVID VAN DER HEYDEN HOUSE

David van der Heyden was an Indian trader traveling as far west as Detroit. His town lot was on the northwest corner of College and Union Streets. When he built his house at this location is not known, but a mortgage on his house is recorded in 1814. Its construction was probably about that time. The structure has undergone so many enlargements and alterations that the original design cannot now be determined. Some of the stone foundations and numerous large hand-hewn beams are obviously parts of the early 1800's structure.
