Description
 JESSE VINCENT TAVERN

The Great Fire of 1819 consumed the the tavern, store, barn and sheds of  Andrew N. VanPatten at the southeast corner of Front Street and Washington Avenue, along with some 200 other buildings in this closely built-up section of the city. Rebuilding took place quickly, however, and a deed dated Oct. 2, 1821 from Andrew N. VanPatten to Jonathan Walton refers to "a certain house and lot of ground with the outhouses and buildings thereon .... at the corner of Washington and Front Streets .... being the Tavern Stand now occupied by Jesse Vincent." The architecture and materials of the structure now standing at 17 Washington Avenue indicate that it is the same structure that was built about 1820 though it has been used only for residential purposes for many years.
