George Holtzman House
By 1879, the graves in the Old Dutch Church Cemetery between Front and Green Streets had to be removed, and a map was filed in the Schenectady County Clerk’s Office in April 1880 to subdivide the plot into 17 building lots, all with 28 to 29 feet of street frontage and varying depth. By the mid-1880s, new houses of brick or wood had been built on these lots.
The four houses at 223, 225, and 227-229 Green Street were constructed in brick and share similar detailing, although the two at 223 and 225 were originally built as detached single family houses while the houses at 227-229 share a common party wall. All have brick exterior walls above stone foundations and a stone belt course at the first floor level, projecting two story bay windows in the front parlors at the side of the main entrance, and the bracketed projecting cornices and ornamental window and door lintels characteristic of the Italianate Revival style. Slight differences in detailing of the cornices and lintels can be seen when comparing the two houses at 223 and 225 and the pair at 227-229 Green St. Lot No. 2 was purchased by George Holtzman in May 1880 and remained in his family’s ownership for the next 60 years. The house at 225 was likely constructed shortly after 1880 and it retains many original features, including the paired entry doors popular in the 19th century.
