JACOBUS VAN ANTWERP HOUSE
This brick and frame house is, like a number of others in downtown Schenectady, a combination of two smaller buildings with a common front added. The land was held by the Van Antwerp family in the mid 1700’s. Jacobus Van Antwerp owned it in 1770. In the attic of one of the houses can be seen the original wood shingle roof. Lewis Farquarson, a Scotsman who operated a general store on State Street, owned both houses for many years. When they were joined together is not known, but it was probably in the early part of the 19th century. An advertisement in the local papers, when Farquarson wanted to sell it in 1835, described it as his "elegant house."
