HARMANUS VAN SLYCK HOUSE
The historian Jonathan Pearson says, "The old VanSlyck House, No 31 Church Street (now No. 9 South Church Street) was built in 1734. See stone in foundation on north side over the new cellar window.” There is no longer any visible evidence of this date, and the architectural details of the present house suggest that a major portion was built somewhat later, probably about 1750. The builder of the house is generally believed to have been Harmanus Van Slyck who lived to be a very old man of whom many tales were told.
