Description
 OLD PUBLIC MARKET

Corner of Front and North Ferry Streets

The Town of Rotterdam is recorded as owning and operating a public market on this spot in 1795. Between 1799 and 1811, Walter Swits is listed as having a blacksmith shop at this location. This probably was in addition to the market. Later he leased the property to Wemple and Spaulding who manufactured nails. In 1821 the land and building were sold by the Town of Rotterdam to Christopher C. Peek. Adrian VanSlyck bought the property in 1835 and operated a grocery store there until at least 1858. The structure is still in use as a public market.
