JOHN MARSELIS HOUSE
Early records show John Marselis, merchant, as the owner of the house at 23 Front Street. He died before 1753 and his widow is recorded as occupying the property at that date. The architecture of the house suggests that it was built at a very early period. Originally it was only one story in height with a steeply sloping roof. Examination of the front wall shows a clear line of demarcation between the original bricks and those laid when the second floor was added. On the east wall the outline of a step gable can be seen faintly. Probably this change was made about the beginning of the 19th century. Later modifications gave the front a Victorian appearance
